The Procedure for Prostate, Kidney & Bladder Ultrasound Scans

In order to best prepare for your Prostate, Kidney & Bladder ultrasound scan, we recommend that you:

Drink 1-2 pints of water an hour beforehand – a full bladder is required for this scan.
Wear loose fitting clothes – you will be asked to lift or remove clothes as required.
Maintain routine medications before your appointment.

You will be asked by one of our sonographers to lie back for this scan and try to get comfortable. Once you are comfy, a gel will be applied to the relevant area for the examination. Our sonographers will use a transducer (a wand like device) to get clear images of the area, taking note of any anomalies and taking necessary measurements.

Note: This scan should not be painful. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, please let your sonographer know straight away.

A prostate, kidney & bladder scan should be approximately 20 minutes and is available for men over the age of 16. Upon completion of the ultrasound scan, a detailed report will be given to you. You can discuss this further with your GP.
