The Procedure for Prostate, Kidney & Bladder Ultrasound Scans

In order to best prepare for your Prostate, Kidney & Bladder ultrasound scan, we recommend that you:

  • Drink 1-2 pints of water an hour beforehand – a full bladder is required for this scan.
  • Wear loose fitting clothes – you will be asked to lift or remove clothes as required.
  • Maintain routine medications before your appointment.

You will be asked by one of our sonographers to lie back for this scan and try to get comfortable. Once you are comfy, a gel will be applied to the relevant area for the examination. Our sonographers will use a transducer (a wand like device) to get clear images of the area, taking note of any anomalies and taking necessary measurements.

Note: This scan should not be painful. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, please let your sonographer know straight away.

A prostate, kidney & bladder scan should be approximately 20 minutes and is available for men over the age of 16. Upon completion of the ultrasound scan, a detailed report will be given to you. You can discuss this further with your GP.
